December 29, 2009 - this is a bank we gave my grandfather when he retired in 1973 but somehow I inherited it.

this is fitting as today I met with a credit councelor to help with my current debt. Debt reduction plans are like going on a diet: 1. stick to your plan with patients, 2. don't borrow money to reduce debt, that's like eating more chocolate cake to lose weight.

December 6, 2009 - This is a window display at an antique shop near

my home. I'm not sure of the age of the Santa but I would guess the doll is vintage 1930's or older. I thought it seemed appropriate to give it a vintage look.

I kept the photo in color, though de-saturated, rather than sepia to give it definition.

This is just some random thoughts

I don't have to like everyone and everyone does not have to like me - I'm used to that.

Friends come and go in my life and we may never cross paths with them again but I'll cherish the time we had together.

If I disagree with someone it does not mean that I disrespect them.

Everyone is a teacher in some way and to someone.

There is a lot of loneliness in the world and love is the cure.

A multi-cultural neighborhood is a richer one for it's diversity.

People who are control freaks are very unhappy people.

I'm a very "what-you-see-is-what-you-get" kind of person.

Looks are really only skin deep. Some beautiful people can be very mean inside and some average people can be very beautiful inside.

I loath pomposity.

I loath people who are righteous too.

People should start seeing art. It's all around you.

Speaking of art, everyone should carry a point and shoot camera with them at all times

Writer's block only occurs when a writer is trying to compete with (and out due) his/her previous work.

Seriously, it's about 45*F and raining. Lousy weather for a Saturday so I decided to bake a loaf of cheesy bread from a recipe I found in a cookbook called, The American Diner Cookbook, by Elizabeth McKorn & Linda Everett.

Cheese Bread

2 envelopes active dry yeast
2 cups warm milk
3 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoons butter
1/4 tsp. salt
4 1/2 cup all- purpose flour
6 oz. sharp cheddar cheese (shredded)

Grease a 1 1/2-quart casserole dish. Set aside.

In a large mixing bowl dissolve the yeast in the milk. Add the sugar, butter, and salt. Stir until well blended. Add the flour. Beat until smooth. Add cheese and mix thoroughly.

Pour the batter in the the prepared casserole dish. Cover with wax paper and place in a warm area. Let rise for one hour or until the dough has doubled in size.

Place the dough in a loaf pan. Bake at 350° for 50 minutes or until the bread tests done. Let cool. Makes one loaf.

This theater has ben on Lake Street for many, many years. This theater was completed in 1937 and now houses The Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theater. Every year this theater company is a main attraction at the May Day Parade in Powderhorn Park

Dave's Popcorn sits on the corner of 38th St. and Longfellow Avenue in South Minneapolis and sells different varieties of popcorn May through October. It's been in this location since the 1960's and the signs in front shows it's age.

Since it looks like that place that time forgot, I thought I would do some PhotoShop work on it like a photograph taken in the 1960's or early 1970's. Perhaps with a Kodak Insamatic camera, 126 Film.

Basically I slightly desaturated the colors, added a yellow cast and increased the magenta a bit. Then blurred it enough to give it a softness overall finally cropped it to a square... tadaaaaaa. Vintage 1969.

I used to get very angry at the Republicans and the pack of lies they spread but as of today it's the folks who believe they're bullshit that I feeling sorry for. They shout down discussion healthcare reform (which willl benefit them too) and have The President's speech to school children across the nation banned in some schools when he's probably just going to ask them to work hard and stay in school.

These people need agressive deprograming. They need to be taught how to think for themselves again.

I really don't understand what happened. I'm sure you been on dates where you have a date and later the gal says that it wasn't a date. You know those mixed signals.We met at Highland Fest a few weeks ago. I was there for an early Meet-ups thing while Lili was going to a Meet- ups for the Aquatenial. She canceled her Meet-up to meet me at Highland Fest. She even said, "If you're going to Highland Fest, that's good enough reason to go."

It was a fun time, we had dinner at Punch Pizza. On our walk to Punch she asked me if I wanted kids someday. That really made me feel uncomfortable, but I said, "What? You mean with you?" She laughed but I said that I like kids. Most of the evening we talked about the dating world and I swear, she's the one who brought it up.

One of the things she was talking about was height. Not mine but women who won't date shorter men. She said that she didn't know what the big deal was but hours laster said that she doesn't date men shorter  than her. But HEY, we can be buddies.

All last week she kept emailing me, like were friends. Upbeat friendly emails pretending we're buddies but I replied with very brief emails.  She has cancelled her account with Match.com and so I sent her my profile In my profile I ask a question, "Tell me something unique about yourself?" So she sent me an email telling me things she considered unique about her self. Then said, "Okay, your turn."

I asked her, "My turn for what?"

"To tell me something unique about yourself." I told her that I had the ability of spot a bullshit artist from 20 years away.   I also said, "'m sick and tired of being judged and especially being judged inaccurately by woman."

She emailed me back  with example of how people misjudge her, not in her dating life, but in everyday life. Then said, "Okay, your turn." Apparently she thought we were having a great conversation about dating but I just wanted her to stop.  I asked her, "My turn for what?">She wanted to know how people misjudge me. I friend suggested that I say that i am misjudged by my height rather than getting to know me. That's when she got defensive about the height thing. She said I'm attractive and fun to hang out with but and she doesn't date guys shorter than her.

This story is getting too long so I'll shorten it up: Getting back to the HIghland Fest, she said that she felt uncomfortable 15 minutes into it because I thought we were on a date and she insisted we were not. I gave her examples of why she thought we were on a date: her canceling a Meet-up to come to Highland Fest and hang out with me.

She did finally admit the mixed signals and she said she didn't let her discomfort show because, "acting runs in my family." So I got her to admit she's a bullshit artist. I also got her to admit that she's obsessed with the dating scene looking for a potential, I don't think she would have met up me if I wasn't a "potential." I got her to admit that she's very much hung up on and ex BF because she talks of him a lot.

One more thing. She sent me one more email describing me as a "socially savvy man who's looking to make friends with a woman and hopefully date... does that sound right?"

I told her that is where I've been misjudged. I joined that singles Meetups to hang out with other singles with out feeling like a third wheel.  If something happens, it happens.

May 16, 2009 - The Court Jester.

This sculpture stands in front of an art gallery in Minneapolis. The detail on him is amazing but I gave it a treatment which gave it a creepy/sureal Mardi Gras look.

About the treatment: THis is actually a composite of 3 different shots (all hand held) I took of the court jester.

First shot was really bad. I tried to balance the camera while holding other things in my hands. That photograph turned out very shkey and had a terrible red streak, hence the magenta cast. No flash

Second shot I used a flash and since this sculpture is bronze, the flash created harsh highlights as you can see the orange strokes on his face

The third shot was taken without a flash which I used as my main layer. I added the first two shots in layers using various blending modes.

Then I added a "TTV" texture that I found in Flickr and as it came together, it became that creepy/sureal look I was after.

I like the design work I did on this old family photo. The little boy in front is my grandfather. He is sitting on his father's lap and the woman in the white white scarf to his right is my grandfather's mother.

They were on a boat headed back to Czechoslovakia for a month visit. My understanding is that my great grandparents had just lost their infant son and they felt it was time to go back to the old country and look up family.

April 2, 2009 - So, I was at the liquor store this afternoon buying a bottle brandy when this funny little guy jumped out of nowhere and asked if I had any jumper cables in my car. He said that he left his lights on and couldn't get his car started.

I told him that I didn't have any jumper cables in my car and he walked away saying, "What kind of dummy doesn't keep jumper cables in his car?"

Hmmm. I do admit that this sort of thing NEVER happens to me before I start drinking ;*)

Actually, this dummy is Jerry Mahoney which belonged to ventriloquist Paul Wnchell and I did bump into a guy at the liquor store today that found this dummy in his attic shortly after he bought his house and he was showing it off to his theirs there. It's wooden, not plastic and very old.

I think my treatment of Jerry Mahoney is kind of creepy looking. That certainly was the look I was going for.

I am one quarter through my Project 366-1 and I am proud to say that I have not failed to take at least one picture per day to up load to my Flickr photostream.

Somethings i have learned in three months:

* Sometimes textures can give my bland photos and extra bit of drama they may need to improve their impact.

* There is always something to photograph, whether it's in my home of down the street, I am on a mission to find it.

* A little thought goes a long way.

* When color is bad, go bland and white... go black and white anyway, it's just darn cool.

I haven't really kept up with my blog as I should have but i am still working on my project 365 and I am proud of this current picture.

For day 55 I drove to a small neighborhood in Minneapolis called "Prospect Park" to photograph the build where my grandfather's grocery store when it closed more that 35 years ago.

This is "Cupcake Coffeehouse and The Witche's Hat." This was photographed this afternoon at a coffee shop called, "Cupcake." You can't miiss this unique coffee mug on the side of the building.

In the background is a watertower famously known as "The Witch's Hat" because of the shape of it's roof which dawns the landscape of Perospect Park in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

1. I was born and raised in Minneapolis and have never lived in any other city until I was 45 years old.

2. I went to the same grade school that my mother went to. She later worked there when I was a student.

3. I was hit by a car while riding my bicycle when I was 11 years old.

4. My earliest vivid memory is my first day of nursery school.

5. I have been to Italy twice but only for a total of 3 1/2 hours and for lunch each time.

6. I live walking distance from a Starbuck's but prefer to walk an extra block to the Mom & Pop coffee shop, where I get my usual, iced coffee.

7. I play the guitar left-handed but I golf right handed.

8. I love photography but never wanted to be a photographer.

9. I don't own a suite.

10. I haven't eaten McDonald's Burger King or Arby's since spring 2001.

For New Years I've made a resolution to take at least one photograph per day everyday until December 31, 2009. I learned of the idea while watching and episode of Epic Fu on New Year's morning. Host Zadi Diaz talked of a site called Photojo that is hosting their own Project 365 in conjuntion with Flickr. Filckr has many groups dedicated to "one-photo-per-day" but the one I belong to is project 366-1.

The idea is to take your camera everywhere you go, grocery shopping, the launder mat, to school or work and photography whatever strikes your attention at the moment. There are no limits to what you can photograph but the rules stipulate that you can upload only one photograph per day to the group. Photojojo has a feature called The Time Capsule, and how it works is next year (2010) Photojojo will send you and email ever two week with your photographs from the previous year of those two weeks. But, when I am done I plan on turning my 365 photographs into a slideshow and blogging it here.

You can find my Photostream set from 366-1 HERE. But I do plan on posting some of my pictures favorite pictures here.

This is one I shot on January 2, 2009 - This picture is amusing to me. The holidays are over and this family is trashing Santa.

A few words about the office holiday party - by Gregory Roth

I just want to say a few words about the office holiday parties. I hate them. They're awful, they're usually a disaster and they're usually an extension of your job... so feel free to decline the invitation if you have had enough of these people. But make sure your excuse is really good so they won't judge you. Maybe mention a colonoscopy that day... They'll believe that; just tell them that you're replacing one pain the ass with another.

But if you have to go, keep certain things in mind. Open bars are dangerous. A person who has too much to drink and is surrounded by representatives of a company he doesn't like very well is never a good combination. You may be inclined to offer suggestions of how to improve the company, "That boss 'o mine... you oughta fire him, he's about as useful as a one knobbed Etch-a-sketch."

In those situations, one can only prey that the person you're talking to has had more to drink than yourself. I remember one company I worked at, each person got two free drink tickets when they walked in the door. After that, you had to pay for your own drinks but honestly, to keep things safe from verbal (and visual) blunders, two drinks is all anyone should have at these things.

I remember the person in charge of the drink tickets was no tea-toadler himself and he couldn't remember who he gave drinks to and how many. People kept asking him for more free drink tickets. "The people at my table said something about free drink tickets..." we would say, "We didn't get any drink tickets."

"Oh gosh," he said as he ripped off some more drink tickets. "Did I forget to give you some drink tickets? Here ya go, MERRY CHRISTMAS."

Then after dinner we could approach him again, "Didn't the newsletter say something about free drink tickets? We didn't get any drink tickets."

"Did I forget to give you some drink tickets? Here ya go, MERRY CHRISTMAS." Ah, nothing like the ol' holiday spirits.

FOOD. Ah yes, the food. If it's a pot luck, never criticize the food regardless of how grotesque it may look, taste and feel. And I understand how hard it is to resist the temptation to yell out, "WHAT'S THAT?" if a dish is completely unidentifiable, but if you must say something about a dish that you are less than fond of, call it "interesting."

"Interesting" is a nice generic word that can be used to describe just about anything. And it can be taken as a compliment too. Especially by those who have had more than their share drink tickets. If it's taken otherwise, you can deny any ill intent and insist it was meant as a compliment. But do not forget to give them that "deer in the headlights" look for effect.

Pot lucks are the scariest of all parties. Last year my office party was a pot luck and everyone brought a dish to share. I was unable to attend and yet I was the only one who did not get terribly sick. Catered parties are always the best.

I attended an office holiday party many years ago where they tried to engage us in singing Christmas carols. Have you ever tried to sing "Carol of the Bells" with a bunch of drunks who have never rehearsed it before? Those things always turn out to be a really bad variation of karaoke and the only way around it is to only request selections from The Chipmunks Christmas Album, everyone will think you are trying to imitate Alvin, Simon and Theodore.

Gift exchanges are always awkward. I always thought it would be fun to get something really tacky like a pink flamingo for their front lawn or, better yet, A CHIA PET. Now that's a tacky gift, and one people would be too embarrassed to re-gift. I knew a guy that gave his brother in-law a chia pet one year for Christmas as a joke. The following year the brother in-law re-gifted the chia pet back to my friend who re-gifted it back to his brother in-law the year after that. They passed it back and fourth, year after year, like some people do with fruit cake.

All this talk about holiday office parties gives me the shakes. My advice ti me is to get appointed to the Holiday Party Committee and make some changes:

1. No free drinks but if there are, all bosses have to be more drunk than everyone else or they can't come.
2. The food has to be catered in... I'm thinking a pig roast would be nice.
3. No singing... this means YOU!!!
4. Everyone gets a chia pet.

I admit that I love old print advertising and even when it has a Christmas theme. Some were corny and interesting. This one is from Coke. I wish I knew the history of this ad, when it was printed and where. It actually looks lie it was printed on the side of a brown grocery bag.

In birthday celebration of the late Boris Karloff, I thought it would be fitting to post a radio version of a show Boris Karloff made famous on Broadway. Arsenic and Old Lace made it's stage debut in 1941. He played the part of Jonathan Brewster, the black sheep of the family who returns home to hide away from the law, as he has killed a dozen men. The description the police have on him is that he looks like "Boris Karloff."

Arsenic and Old Lace came to the silver screen in 1944 and starred Cary Grant as Mortimer Brewster, Raymond Massey playing Karloff's part of Jonathan Brewster, and Peter Lorre as Dr. Einstein.

Rocket ship at Brackett Park

When I was a kid, we used to be able to climb in this rocket ship and play around In recent years the Minnesoolis Park Board deemed this ship unsafe and removed it from the park's playground.

The neighborhood petitioned the park to return the ship as a landmark. I like how they made it look it it's blasting off into space and of course children can no longer climb in it.

Happy Anniversary "Duck Soup

This morning NPR's Weekend America reported that November 2008 marks (or Marx) the 70th anniversary since the release of The Marx Brothers war comedy, Duck Soup. It's one of my favorite comedies and the very film that made me a fan of The Marx Brothers.
